    Vesuvius is of course known for the deadly eruption in 79 AD which released 100,000 times the thermal energy of the atomic bombs which devastated Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  I believe this photo is by Edizioni Esposito who was active from 1870-1890 in the area around Pompei.
